At 10,500 square feet, this animal shelter in the High Sierras for the Town of Truckee and the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe is modest in size but ambitious in intent. The facility combines animal control offices with a state-of-the-art animal shelter built around the idea of providing the best possible humane housing environments for the animals.
High in snow country, the building was designed to be responsive to local climate extremes. With a compact floor plan, sheltering roof, and super insulated envelope, the building provides respite from the outdoor environs. South-facing animal spaces and oversized windows combine to create a building that is flooded with daylight.
