Overview

SAGE Concord is a specialty and emergency hospital serving the north bay area of California. To create their new home, a former 1970s office building was transformed into a state-of-the-art
veterinary hospital. The renovation included a small addition, incorporating a mobile MRI onto the site, a new service elevator, all new energy efficient windows, and completely new interiors,
including HVAC, walls, and finishes.

The new hospital has 20 exam rooms, six surgery suites, and offers full imaging services including CT and MRI. The facility was designed to support surgery, Neurology, Oncology, Cardiology, Internal Medicine, and Physical Rehabilitation, as well as a 24-hour emergency care center.

The building design emphasizes transparency, communication, and quick workflow to help preserve the close-knit medical teams as they transitioned from their old, cramped hospital to this much larger space. This was accomplished by carefully mapping circulation from room to room and floor to floor, creating shared doctors’ offices acting as hubs located in the middle of
each floor, and incorporating internal windows between all spaces allowing for views across the floor and consistent supervision.
