Overview

The Best Friends Animal Society Animal Clinic is a new, state-of-the-art veterinary facility to serve the animal residents who live at their beautiful desert sanctuary located in Kanab, Utah. Completed in March 2014, the approximately 13,000 square-foot building features a full-service hospital offering general, dental, specialty, and other veterinary services. A large in-house lab, a dispensing pharmacy, and a separate, sterile surgery zone are also included.

Careful attention was given to the design of the housing and medical wards and include outdoor areas for both cats and dogs. The building’s southwestern appearance includes stucco and stone walls, beautiful horizontal roof lines, and natural wood canopies that make it a perfect fit for the rustic desert landscape.

Strategic placement of windows and a proper orientation of the building on the site allow the building to take advantage of the winter sun. Proper siting, clerestory windows with deep overhangs, and shading devices shield the interior from the summer sun. Entry locations and site walls help to protect against prevailing winds and the intrusion of sand into the building.

Interior features include a lobby and a treatment area with vaulted ceilings and high clerestory windows, skylights, large windows for abundant natural light, and a stone feature wall with a running waterfall.
