Overview

As the only animal shelter serving Kent County in Maryland, the new facility will greatly expand the services provided to the community. By replacing the former 60-year-old building, the Animal Care Shelter for Kent County is an excellent example of a small but mighty project incorporating well-designed animal housing spaces, veterinary services, and community education.

The new shelter building was funded through private donations. The building is set on a beautiful open site in a rural part of Maryland with lots of outdoor green space for the
dogs in care to play and socialize.

The building was designed to blend with the local agricultural heritage while also presenting a clean and modern look. The large windows flood the interior spaces with natural light, provide
views of the surroundings, and emphasize the building’s natural-toned materials to create bright and joyful spaces. The modern light fixtures and comfortable furnishings help make the
shelter relaxing for people and pets.

The animal spaces include cat colony rooms that lead onto catios, cat condos, and spacious dog runs. Expanded veterinary spaces allow for a higher quality veterinary care for pets in the
community.
