In 2019, Animal Arts and a local partner, were hired by Fulton County to begin an extensive process to provide a new animal shelter to the community. The county’s former shelter was 45-years old and severely outdated and undersized to serve the county’s current and future needs.
The project team conducted an analysis of the former facility, the intake/outcome statistics for the animals in care, and a geographic study before establishing criteria to create a design that would meet or exceed best practice standards for animal care while providing the county with a LEED-certified facility that would meet the community’s needs now and for the next forty+ years.
Considerations for the location of the new facility included ACO drive times, socio-economic factors, and areas of the county with the highest animal intake numbers. Numerous sites were analyzed by the team to establish the best location.
The new shelter will help the county care for and find forever homes for thousands of pets (including farm animals) every year. The new facility also helps provide important training and community-facing services to help keep pets in their homes.
The new shelter includes specialized mutternity and catternity spaces, a state-of-the-art veterinary clinic that provides in-house care to sheltered animals and wellness care to owned pets, a barn for farm animals, and indoor/outdoor dog kennels with direct access to yards. Sheltered cats also have multiple housing options with condos, runs, and community spaces for social cats.
